During wintertime mice try to get into the beehives as the bees stay all very close together and the mice take no risk of being stung to death.
Sitting in the hive close to the bees the mice consider the bees as a welcome snack and eat them…sometimes spiced up with a little honey.
So to keep the mice out of the beehives the entrance is closed with a fence that is wide enough to let the bees pass while keeping the mice outside.
